I have long had a love for traveling to far-flung places, and a passion for painting traditional cultures around the world. I began by painting scenes I observed while in South America and Mexico. Since 2011 I have been painting scenes from the province of Xinjiang Uyghur Autonomous Region in the far northwestern corner of China, home to over a dozen minority peoples. As I have witnessed how quickly modernity is encroaching on and changing many aspects of traditional cultures around the world, I feel a sense of urgency to document the traditional elements that remain. My most recent collection of oil paintings, "A Portrait of Xinjiang" celebrates the dignity, beauty, history, and cultures of the minorities of Xinjiang, among whom I have had the privilege of living. My paintings are primarily done in oil on panel, and are characterized by bold colors and vivid brushstrokes.
